Types and Stages of Tai Chi
There are five major schools of Tai Chi. They are:
• Chen
• Yang
• Wu
• Wu
• Sun
Over time there has been some debate regarding the precise number o forms that included in each style. For
example, there has been debate regarding whether there are 108 or 129 forms within the Yang style. Even so, you
will likely find that regardless of where you decide to take instruction, your teacher will probably have a decided
idea regarding the number of forms which should be performed.
Stages of Tai Chi You should also know that there are three stages in which Tai Chi is
typically learned.
The Forms This is the first stage. During this stage, focus is placed on how each of the
forms and motions should be correctly executed.
Push Hands This is the second stage which focuses on the martial arts applications of each
of the forms in regards to the actual sparring.
Tai Chi Energy
This is the third phase, which focuses on the meditation of the vital energy as well as character building. During
the third stage, you will practice more advanced forms that will improve your alertness, awareness, focus and
concentration. You should know that it can take some time in order to achieve this level.
